A gentle guide for anyone learning, or coming back
The Rosary is a way of praying through the life of Jesus with his mother Mary beside you. You repeat a few simple prayers, and while your lips pray them, your mind rests on a scene from the Gospel called a mystery. You do not need anything memorized, and you do not need to do it perfectly. If you lose your place, just pick back up.
A rosary is a crucifix joined to a short strand of beads that leads up to a small medal called the centerpiece. From the centerpiece hangs a loop of fifty beads, arranged in five groups of ten called decades, with a single larger bead set slightly apart before each group. You begin at the crucifix, pray your way up the short strand, then travel around the loop one decade at a time until you arrive back at the centerpiece. The beads only keep count, so your mind is free to pray. If you do not have a rosary, use your fingers, or just follow along and let the app keep your place.
Each group of ten beads is a decade, and each decade carries one mystery.
Move to the next single bead and begin the next mystery, until all five decades are prayed.
Back at the centerpiece, pray the Hail, Holy Queen, then the concluding prayer of the Rosary. Finish by making the Sign of the Cross on the crucifix.

The point is not speed or getting every word right. It is time spent with the Lord and his mother. Some days your mind will wander the whole way through. That is alright. Coming back is the prayer.
